Author's note: [livejournal.com profile] armillarysphere has generously looked this over so if there is any errors/brit words left in, it's all my fault. I wanted to write something warm and comfy, so I did. Anyway, I hope you enjoy, comments are amazing and I love them a lot.

Steve's days off are pretty much scattered around. Danny - Danny's got a much more regular schedule as possible, if only for Grace, not to give any ammo to Rachel. Sometimes they can't help it, but if Steve can pull it off, he will; he’ll work on his own or with Chin while Danny takes Grace to the beach.

Danny has the decency not to yell at Steve when this happens, when a case forces Steve out of the house too early on a Saturday when he should have been hanging around with Danny and Grace. There's a myriad of issues in their relationship, but Danny manages not to make this - this thing that Steve does for him - another one.

So their days off happen when they happen, but their days off together are even more rare. Steve likes them; they give him the time to look at how Danny's skin looks in the morning light filtering through the bedroom blinds, smooth (smoother than his own) and more tanned than Danny would like to admit, small nests of freckles over his shoulders. He's got new ones, and Steve leans down to kiss at them, tasting them on the tip of his tongue, and he earns himself a groan and a grumble in answer, smiles, pulls away. Steve doesn't do it to wake Danny up, he knows how badly Danny cherishes his sleep and he knows how much he enjoys seeing those creases around Danny's eyes disappear, the ones that are full of tension, not laughter.

He just likes the taste of Danny's skin in the morning, sleep-soaked and warm and flashing golden when he shifts, catching a ray of sun in the crook of his shoulder blade. And Steve can't sleep like this anyway, his body conditioned, wired to wake up before 7 am every morning, even these mornings when he doesn't have to. But then he watches Danny sleep soundly, his features relaxed, face half-hidden in the pillow he stole from Steve's side, his hair everywhere, a crown of fine, bright hair that looks so foreign in Hawaii but perfect on Danny. And when he watches Danny sleep, Steve feels his own muscles relax and he's all mellowed out, wondering what Danny’s dreaming about and wondering if the smell of coffee and a mountain of pancakes and crispy bacon with maple syrup in generous amounts would wake Danny up.

Steve knows it won't - for all that Danny loves his morning coffee, and his food (God knows he loves his food), it's not enough to rouse him. Still, he slides off the bed as silently as he can, pads around to find some boxers he puts on - they're inside out he doesn't give a fuck - grabs his swimming trunks and a towel and heads out of the bedroom, the soft sounds of Danny's steady breathing giving a rhythm to Steve's movements.

He goes for his morning swim first, and he lets the sounds of the water rushing past him and the feelings of his body, sleek and fast, take the best of his head, filling it up until everything else is white noise and blinding sun. It wakes him up better than any breakfast ever would, but when he comes back to shore, coffee is the first thing he goes for anyway. Danny must be rubbing off on him.

But as he sits outside, legs stretched out in front of him and head tilted towards the sun, he can almost feel his pulse slow down, his body adjusting to how the world, how this island is acting. He knows somewhere not that far, back on the mainland, everything is busy and rushed and stressed out, and there even might be rain and there most definitely are curses and gunshots and crying, but here, now, on his lanai in Hawaii, in his parents' old house that he's slowly making his - theirs - Steve lets his world slow down, lets his shorts and skin dry off in the slight breeze, lets his coffee cool.

He almost dozes off before he opens his eyes, gives one look at his coffee before deciding against it in the end, and he grabs his phone, a delighted, if only a little wicked smile appearing on his lips. These moments away from work and Danny, they're the only moments allowing Steve to fully give some of his more trivial pleasures some time. He knows what Danny would say - what the hell is this, what are you doing, McGarrett, are you 6, playing games like that, even my daughter would be better than you at this, come on. The thought makes Steve chuckle, because Danny is shit when it comes to technology, something dark and mocking unfurling itself inside his stomach. He's not a mean man, it's just easy to rile Danny up and it leads to pretty spectacular sex, so Steve presses buttons just so he gets to see that particular look on Danny's face, the one when he comes, a mix of fondness, love, complete bewilderment and bliss.

He loses himself between this - images of Danny writhing under him, naked, sweaty, happy, giggling (the sound strangely feminine coming from Danny) when Steve brushes his fingers against his ribs, where he's ticklish - and Angry Birds, treating the game like any other military operation, thinking about all the possibilities of bird landing, exploding, dropping an egg on evil little green pigs, maximizing his thinking time to have the least retries possible, whilst getting as many stars as possible. He hates losing little bird soldiers when he doesn't have to.

He's so focused - this level is a bitch, he's already on his fourth time and he usually never has to do them more than twice - that he doesn't hear Danny coming out, padding softly to the table and leaving his coffee on it. Steve looks up when Danny trails a hand along Steve's cup of coffee, making a face that is almost as hilarious as it's adorable.

"Your coffee's cold. What you doing?"

He barely manages to finish his sentence before he yawns, scratching his bare stomach and then stretching up, the tips of his fingers reaching out for the endlessly blue sky, muscles rippling under his skin. Steve's mouth dries up, but his coffee's cold.

"Playing a game. Morning."

Danny moves closer, wrapping his fingers around the back of Steve's neck for a moment as he looks at the iPhone screen. It's a way of saying hello without using words and Steve likes it, because Danny very rarely doesn't use his words. It's a little precious.

"I learn new things about you every day, McGarrett."

Steve smiles, shields his eyes as he watches Danny sit in front of him. It doesn't even make Steve twitch when Danny's foot comes to rest on his calf, curling around it. Danny's face is relaxed, his smile content when he closes his eyes, a happy sigh escaping him. Hawaii really does look good on him, despite anything he could say.

"You do?"

"Hmmm. You play games."

Their eyes meet. Steve raises an eyebrow, and Danny's face is composed, but they're both breaking into smiles. Danny always complains he can't read Steve, that he needs a dictionary, but he's much closer to being fluent than he lets on.

"You know I do."

"Can I try?"

"No."

Danny sighs. He sounds so put upon Steve has to bite his lip to keep himself from laughing.

"Why not? You're ruining my morning buzz."

"Because it'll stress you out and then your morning buzz will really be ruined."

Steve just knows - between Danny's goofy thumbs and his ability to get angry at anything and everything in the world, letting him play Angry Birds is about as good an idea as letting Grace strip a gun. He would if he wanted to play, to tease, but right now it's too quiet, too peaceful for an angry Danny Williams.

He can hear real birds singing from the trees surrounding the private beach, can feel how Danny's foot on his calf is a little callused, a lot warm, he can smell the tangy twist in the air coming from the sea. He moves about just enough that he can grab Danny's foot and put it over his lap, fingers working the zones he knows are for tension relief. An old lady in Europe taught him reflexology.

Danny groans, tilting his head back, and Steve's refusal to let him play his game seems to be completely forgotten. This is why Steve likes these days, when everything is still and calm and there is no crisis to think about, nothing in the back of their minds. It's rare and to Steve it's precious that he can take his time, that he's got nothing better than this. This, Danny, the house.

"Is there any malasadas left?"

"You should know, you're the one eating them. There's one in the fridge."

Danny grins, his head still tilted away, regular small groans leaving him when Steve applies pressure. He doesn't even think about what he's doing as his fingers slide up on Danny's calf, digging his fingertips in the muscles. When Danny moves he does it slowly, and he stops in front of Steve before anything, hiding the sun for a second before he leans down, fingers holding Steve's chin in place as he kisses him. He caresses Steve's cheek as he does, first kiss of the morning, a bit slow and a lot deep, almost too much already. Danny pulls away with Steve's bottom lip between his teeth, and he nibbles for a second before letting go.

"I'll get you another coffee. Do we have any plans, today?"

Steve grins, shakes his head.

"No."

Danny breathes out against Steve's lips, kisses him again, just brief, a dry press of lips.

"Perfect."

You know, I had a bunny a while ago about the two bitching about Angry bird (since pacman is a little old and Steve's be the spoke person for Apple I don't know for how long.). And there is you. It's just perfect!

Four times is a bitch? I spent a whole week on a stupid level then I had to find the youtube video to cheat it through. McG.....it's just a game, don't do it like you're organizing a strategic op. LOL.

Heeeee! I can just see his little focused face. I'm so glad you liked it!!

And 4 times is a bitch when you're Lt Commander McGarrett! I have given up on that game, I am too much like Danny and it drives me absolutely bonkers, can not play it without fearing an aneurysm.

I have to agree with Danny on this one. Perfect. I loved how calm and quiet it is. Hell, I could hear the waves lapping at the shore just reading.

Also, that Steve plays Angry Birds with the same focus as a strategic op brings joy to my black little heart.

Thanks so much for sharing. :D

\o/ I tried really hard to convey the quiet and stillness, because it happens oh so very rarely in their lives.

Seriously cannot imagine him playing it any other way! Even if he played it with Grace he'd try to make it a strategic op! I am a complete Danny, I cannot play that game, it makes me scared I'll pop a vein.

Thank you so much for reading!!

I like how you took the fandom norms and just flipped 'em. Like with the house, how everyone writes that Steve is uncomfortable there because of the memories and emptiness and the loneliness, but instead you made it a place for him to make his own, like a gift from his dad or his family, like the Marquis, like maybe he can start trying to move on from the pain by making some good memories in a painful place (with Danno). Also, you wrote the couple quiet and content instead of angsty or horny. xD I can see this as one of their rare Sunday mornings. Maybe Rachel likes to take Grace to church or some other obligation and this is how Steve and Danny wake up, lazy and free of burden, and they'd really just like to...enjoy each other's existence in the other's life, y/y? :) I think so.

Also, the bit with the foot, I fuckin' loved that. I can so see Steve doing that (and having the training from like some random monastery! xD) just because he loves to touch Danny and make him feel good any chance he gets. Steve feels good when Danny does. :D

Lovely, thankyouuu. ♥

Maybe it's because I'm fairly new in the fandom that I don't feel too restricted by the way everybody writes some details? I can imagine moments when Steve feels lonely and oppressed in that house, I can, but I can also see moments where he just takes it in and realizes he's home, now, for the first time in years.
And I love the idea of them angsty and horny and angry but I can see the quiet moments too - it reminds me of when Steve called in the Governor to get Rachel to drop the case for Danny not to see Grace as much anymore, or the whole Matty episode. I love the fact that they're not unidimensional, I want to write about everyyyyyything ^^.

The foot bit just came to me, it wasn't even planned! I just could see it happen...

I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

Steve playing games like they're strategic ops is the best thing ever. And so canon! XD

Mmm, very nice. :D
I love these sleepy, warm, lazy day fics!

After reading that last line, I can't help but imagine Danny using the kiss as a distraction to snatch the game and spend the whole day being all sorts of smug when he beats the level Steve was having so much trouble with in one try. :D

XD I love this take on their life.

Steve is so adorable playing Angry birds. Kudos for him not letting Danny play it. Thank god I've never played it, knowing me I'd be like Danny getting angry and frustrated for no reason.

Ahah I'm popping a vein every time I play it and I'm much like Danny - I'm an angry person, frustrated with the world :'). I guess that's why I can relate to him ^^. I'm glad you liked it! It was really nice to write.
