I think he really does. It would have to be impossible to be unaware of that level of pornability. (I don't care what spell check says, pornability should be a word.)
Maybe it's just part of his acting talent--he is seriously such an amazing physical actor, it wouldn't surprise me if he was just "playing sexy" and didn't get that it's the combo of those looks and the looks that make us go pre-verbal....
