armillarysphere looked this over for me, thank you bb. It was sticking to my head all morning after watching the latest episode, so I had to write it. I hope you enjoy, comments are amazing and I love them a lot.
He should have known this was bound to happen, in some way. It was obvious and it happened almost every time after one of those cases that Steve let come too close to his own heart and issues. Danny wouldn't dare saying he's better than that, he's not, fuck knows he's not. He's just as fucked up and he's got as much baggage as Steve does, only it's a different sort. His is laden with kids and mafia and serial killers and a failed marriage and residual feelings for his ex-wife, while Steve, well. Most of Steve is classified, forced away from Danny's prying eyes and words and hands, but there also are the daddy issues and this higher sense of justice that only Steve understands, that kept him pushing, through sleepless nights and angry looks.
So this is not a first, it happened after Roland, it happened after Ming Hua and Mr Chi. But maybe Steve had decided that Pauline's story is even closer to home, because this time it's bad - not as bad as Hesse, but still, worse than it could be, worse than it should be by now. Maybe the job is taking its toll on Steve or maybe he's just tired, through the smiles he gives kids when they're at the beach. Danny's not sure, and he isn't about to push the issue - he knows better than that, he's dealt with enough of this shit in the past. He's dealt with enough of Steve's shit already to know better than push.
In the end, when they're back at Steve's house, Danny's quieter than usual when he slides behind Steve in the shower and wraps his arms around Steve's waist, pressing his forehead to Steve's shoulder blade, closing his eyes as the lukewarm water hit his skin. He hears the hitch in Steve's breath, feels how he tenses for a second before letting go, relaxing into Danny's touch. Danny wonders sometimes, maybe Steve will start crying this time, talk about his dad, his sister, Hell, his mother, but he never does, of course he doesn't, his feelings locked away in a place Danny barely ever have access to. He'll be okay, Steve whispers under the steady stream of water, and Danny smiles, doesn't believe a second of it.
They all deal with getting through their feelings in different ways. Danny gets drunk, gets so drunk he can't remember why he even feels pain in the first place. Steve's hungry for the same kind of release from the thoughts in his head, but he looks for it elsewhere. He looks for it in working out, to the point of passing out on his couch.
Where they find common ground, though, is this other way to find an escape from their own minds, now, this new way. Meka's case unlocked everything, and it should have changed everything only it didn't really, because they never talked about it and nobody knew and it worked that way. And maybe Danny's an idiot, or maybe it's Steve, but most probably it's the two of them, and they're idiots when it comes to each other and anyone would tell them, they're using each other, yes, okay, but who the fuck cares when it helps.
Danny lets Steve pin his hands over his head against the shower wall, gasps when Steve presses his teeth to his neck, rolls his hips into Steve's. He allows Steve the upper hand, the possibility for him to lose himself in Danny, and fuck, Danny hopes Steve does, because he's seen the hollow version of Steve, the haunted one, and it's a scarier version than the all guns blazing, you're my back up one, because the walls Steve can put up - Danny could break his hands, head and heart trying to bring them down. And even if fuck, he'll never admit this to anyone, he'sterrified one day, one case will be just too far and there will be no way for Steve to come back.
Steve groans into Danny's mouth just before he comes and he goes lax, sighing against Danny's cheek, and Danny only has to look into Steve's eyes to follow. Steve's hands move, letting go of Danny's, and unwrapping from around both their dicks, but Danny doesn't let him go too far, curling his hand around the back of Steve's neck and pulling him down for another kiss, a little breathless and a lot more relaxed than earlier. Maybe Danny will have to cuff Steve to the bedpost during the night to keep himself from being Steve's punching bag - the man has terrible vivid dreams, apparently, it's just sheer luck that Danny hasn't had a black eye yet - but they're getting somewhere, and this, this won't be their last case, it won't be the one Danny loses Steve to.
Not yet. He's not ready to.
