delicatale: (Danno and his tongue)
[personal profile] delicatale

So, the Danno thing? I will be in a league of my own there, but I thought it was more than fair game. He was teasing her, she got to slam back.

I tend not to see the ~flirting, or at least I don't see it that way. I choose not to see it that way, and maybe it makes me delusional or something, but you know what? Better that than to be bitter and annoyed every time she is on screen. I'm not her biggest fan, and I get and understand many of the reasons why people don't like her. But I choose to ignore her more than anything else. That's my shtick, and it works for me. You may not agree.

Danny, Danny, Danny. I agree with his views on beliefs, but I also agree with the others, you don't disrespect something sacred like that. It made you sound a bit like an ass, to be honest, and it was...weird.

Also, you could have turned your daughter away from the drunk at the beginning. You don't have to fight for everything, babe. Oooh, fodder for fic here.

The whole ~manipulating the landlord felt very Italian to me, which felt very in character. My Gran is like that, she'll try to get a discount for everything, she used to choose slightly banged up boxes of cereals to have prices on them in the supermarket when I was little. So, Italian, so, idk, since Danny has Italian roots in my headcanon, it felt right. If you thought it was douchey, take it up with my Gran.

Again, I found Kono SO PRETTY in this episode, and that might be because I missed her so much at the beginning of the season, I don't know, but those last two episodes she looked just gorgeous. The whole thing with the priest was heeeee, and I like the fact that she has bonded with Lori.

Also, headcanon, Lori and Max totally went to that costume party together. And she was dressed as Trinity.

The end of that episode, I just. Danny, wearing Converses! And jeans! Steve wearing this most delightful almost see through yellow shirt! And flip flops! Looking all smug and impatient and eyefucking when they're done installing the bed! Kono's little 'ooooooh' when Danny says he might buy a steak knife! Steve only costs Danny a beer! He's such a cheap date. Chin's put upon look! Lori not even protesting about the painting! Steve running after Danny! Heeeeee! That last scene was absolutely perfect. I could have a show of this, I'll be honest ;).

Now, you guys, write me all the codas where Danny comments on Steve's shirt and takes it off, and the two of them sneak off to storage to christen that big big mattress.

Also, you know, when Joe isn't there? I ENJOY. His absence makes me happy.

So, the Danno thing? I will be in a league of my own there, but I thought it was more than fair game. He was being a dick to her, she got to slam back. I don't think that was Danny being a dick but joking with Lori--doesn't he treat Kono in the same half-flirty way and she always seems to get that he's kidding with her.

And I think you're right that it's better to focus on the positive--the great McDanno moments then to focus on the negative Lori stuff.

I worded it badly - I did mean, when I said that he was being a dick to her, that he was teasing her. To me, she was teasing back!

There was a lot that felt off to me in that episode (and not entirely the fault of anyone but the writers), but for me the 'Danno' thing comes off as so sucky for me, personally, just because of how they framed the scene previous. His daughter, the originator or said nickname, runs off happily to NOT trick-or-treat with him. Suddenly, someone new to the team, not-Chin, not-Kono (who've never canonically done it) calls him that. Hell, even if STEVE had at that exact time, I would've thought it salt rubbed in a wound due to the opener.

The rest of the episode had tons of stuff I liked (involving everyone, including Lori), but I don't know. It had this weird off feeling I couldn't shake.

It didn't bother me so much. Idk, I just took it as a 'you just said something really teasing/stupid to me, what can I say in return that I know will annoy you'. I might be wrong, but, that's the way I took it!

The whole episode was duller than a sack of hammers for me. I didn't find Danny as douchey as most people because a) crime scene and b) I wouldn't peg a ghost for throwing a rock either. Though, it's not as though I didn't think he wasn't being an ass: he was.

Lori calling Danny Danno didn't faze me...but I've come to terms that I just can't get into her that much. All her scenes would have been served better with Kono and I'm bored with her character despite wanting to like her.

I loved every scene with Max, though, because he was brilliant.

And mostly, I loved that Chin asked Danny about the mattress. Danny/Chin is my otp and I love every tiny little even nod or moment when they interact with each other.

He was being an ass. I put it to the fact that he was upset about the whole Grace doesn't like where he lives thus she doesn't really care about spending time with him these days thing. It'd be pretty upsetting to him and make him impossible, I can buy that. He didn't have to be such an ass, though.

I just tend to ignore Lori. I just forget about whatever she's been saying very quickly.

Danny/Chin! Interesting OTP, also incredibly rare...

I kinda feel for him, in a way. Even if I don't agree how he expresses it. As someone who doesn't just not follow a faith, but feels very strongly in a negative sense towards organized religion...if you don't believe and someone else does, you're always in the wrong in how you feel about it. Whomever has faith in whatever...their feelings always matter more. And I find, personally, that people are quite dismissive of people who don't follow a particular faith. Like we're automatically...lesser because of it? But, that's my own personal damage. Still think he was acting like an ass.

Oh my God, I agree so much with this. So, so much, because I'm the exact same, and I hate people making me feel like it's wrong for me to not believe. That cargument made me feel uncomfortable all 'round, to be fair.

I was more bothered about how dismissive the show is about mental illness, tbh. I'm tired of people needing to be "crazy" to be a killer. It's a very unhelpful stigma for those of us with chronic mental illnesses.

Date: 2011-11-01 11:38 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] delicatale.livejournal.com
I guess their definition of 'crazy' is just too broad. I thought the whole girlfriend part of the episode could have done with more care and explanation.

I handwave a lot of things when it comes to this show.

I took that whole scene as Steve being upset not at danny's lack of beliefs but at the way Danny totally dissed other people's beliefs. If it was just that Danny has no beliefs Steve probably wouldn't have been like that. If I was Kono or Chin I would have been all over his butt Ohana or not...and me a Danno girl.
Would be funny if someone at the scene complained and Danno had to go take some classes *G*

Butting in...me too. (I'm an atheist.) Also, that conversation took me by surprise, with the implication that Steve was religious and sort of intolerant of Danny's lack of faith. Intolerant is too strong a word - Steve was surprised by it. Which surprised me,in turn. I'm surprised an American TV show is even bringing up the topic actually, or allowing a character to be an atheist.

you know I've watched just about everything that Alex O'L has done on screen - big and little - and he has chemistry with everyone he acts with - male and female.....he was really at his peak with both his costars on Moonlight - "Josef and Beth" -- but I"m sorry --- he does NOT have any chemistry with Lori = or at least if he does I haven't seen it yet. He acts wooden around her - as she does around him....its NOT working onscreen for me at least....it almost seems as tho he's uncomfortable around her.....and perhaps he is....

as for the "Danno" thing - I kind of knew where it was coming from too - she was digging at him coz he wouldn't let the costume thing go....

I thought she was supposed to be Governor's rat...so far she is really just a blonde with a gun to me...

*sigh*

Date: 2011-11-01 11:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] delicatale.livejournal.com
I've seen most of his stuff as well, and I agree with the Moonlight comment. Mick's chemistry with Coraline as well was incredible, even though I hate her with a fiery passion.
Thing is, it seems obvious that they're very much following the script when they have scenes just the two of them, and it feels a bit...meh. Especially knowing how well Alex can do.

I agree with all this - I'm not Lori's biggest fan, definitely, which is why I tend to ignore her. I wish she was more of a minor character, like Jenna was - I'm not going to go around and say I think she should be dead. I find that wrong, even talking about a fictional character...

She probably would have been more interesting if they'd kept going with the Governor thing!

God, why didn't they do that? That's so much more interesting that Lori just being a new random team member. It would have set up an interesting dynamic of 5-0 not really being able to trust her. I can't believe they just dropped that.

I didn't even realize Joe wasn't in this ep until you said it! haha, don't need him at all. I loved the last scene, so perfect. The treat or treating scene made my heart break for Danny. It was weird that Grace was so gleeful, and I think that was misdirected. It was overdone and not realistic at all. Danny fighting for the apartment discount was so Jersey, I thought. I loved that Kono was more in this ep and the interaction with the priest was lovely. I'll be honest, I wanted Kono in those action scenes that Lori was in and Kono was...somewhere else, off screen.

I barely noticed Lori calling Danny Danno, but I'm getting the impression it was a big deal for fandom after seeing some posts. Um, yeah. I don't really care at all. Danny called Chin babe.

Date: 2011-11-01 11:50 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] delicatale.livejournal.com
See, that's the thing, it shows just how unnecessary it is for him to be everywhere. When the Wo Fat thing is going on, fair enough - I actually quite like that he's not only in this to help Steve but he's got his own agenda going as well. I am rooting for him to be very ambiguous.

But when that storyline is not going on? No need for Joe at all, and it shows.

I think the reason Grace was so gleeful was that she really couldn't have enjoyed trick or treating in some kind of seedy hotel. I can't understand why Danny wouldn't take her somewhere else to trick or treat, but that's some kind of writing lapse I'm willing to handwave.

I'd rather have more Kono and less Lori, too, but I'm getting used to blanking her. I didn't follow what she was saying to Gabby at all during that scene, too taken in Steve and Danny and Gabby to even care about what Lori was talking about. Blanking her, it works for me! But, more Kono, more Chin - at least we had a decent amount of Danny this episode, even if he acted off and douchey at times.

From: [identity profile] alba17.livejournal.com
Having more Danny was awesome and I was really glad to get back to some his personal issues because they dropped those in and moved off so quickly, I almost forgot, even though they were huge. Oh good point about Grace not wanting to trick or treat at a seedy hotel, LOL. Yes, Danny, take her to an actual neighborhood, dummy.

OK, I was amused by his blowing off the Hawaiian traditions stuff. He was douchey but it was still kind of funny because you knew he was going to get paid back for it and he was, royally. Also, it makes him a little more complex.

God, I love Danny getting all hot and bothered about the museum woman, he's so funny. and Steve making fun. hee

Danny was definitely being an ass about the whole thing with the burial ground, but still, it seemed very Danny to me. Although more exaggerated than we've seen before.

I had no problem with him trying to get that apartment though. Maybe it's the italian thing. Or maybe it's living in an expensive city.

I enjoyed the ep because it had so much Danny, and Danny and Steve, and Danny was so cute at the end, with the talk of pots and pans, and making Lori paint, and then changing his mind and leaving, and Steve running after him, all so cute!

And yes, with the bed. And Steve's shirt.

Date: 2011-11-01 01:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] delicatale.livejournal.com
I think the Italian thing makes us immune to the bargaining! That helps.

Lots of Danny in this episode was definitely GOOD. And the bed. And Steve's shirt.

Lori, yeah, she does annoy me, but hey, YMMV, it's all good.

Danny! I totally agree, this: You don't have to fight for everything, babe. Oooh, fodder for fic here. And Gracie, sounding so resigned! Interesting scene right there.

Manipulating the landlord... Oh, I had a bad feeling about that scene, but a worse one when he said, "back home, all the homicide detectives lived in the best pads." Your explanation works for me, but it still gives me the shivers.

I loved Kono's t-shirt and boots! I want to know where she shops; I want to own her wardrobe.

Date: 2011-11-01 01:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] delicatale.livejournal.com
I'm not surprised that a lot of Jersey detectives would make moves on nice places that will be cheaper because of crimes. I don't know, it doesn't bother me? Not that I would like to live in a place like that, but, somehow, I get it. What bothered you so much about it? Is it the idea that a crime happened there, or something like corruption?

Date: 2011-11-01 01:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] verasteine.livejournal.com
I think it's because I'm hypersensitive to police corruption, which this show often displays as par for the course, or funny, and this feels like it could be legal, but it skirts the line. So yeah, corruption, and probably just because I hold very firmly to the idea that the guardians of the law should be above reproach.

From: [identity profile] gothikmaus.livejournal.com
At first when you said the whole landlord thing felt very Italian, I thought "What the hell?" Then you explained it and I was like "Oh God, that's so true." It made me realise a lot of the things Danny does feel Italian somehow: being an overprotective dad, chasing skirts and making obvious comments about attractive women, being a little racist because home is the best place ever and nothing will ever top it, not even a tropical paradise like Hawaii. I guess that's the reason why I don't understand people getting so irritated, or downright pissed off, with him: because the way he acts looks perfectly normal and in character to me.

Date: 2011-11-01 01:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] delicatale.livejournal.com
True, I'm the same. I'm not from Italy as such, but I've grown up in the Italian immigrants family unit, and to me, it feels quite natural, the way he acts. I've seen people getting aggravated with how much of an overprotective dad he is - he's never said anything I couldn't imagine my own father saying. Same with a lot of other little things - I think it's just the way he was raised.

Date: 2011-11-01 01:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gothikmaus.livejournal.com
Exactly! Sometimes when I read certain comments I'm tempted to reply "You obviously don't know any Italian fathers, do you?"

From: [identity profile] clau-mol.livejournal.com
the whole bargaining for the apartment thing didn't bother me at all. I'm to used to that, my mom's oldest sister will NEVER be caught paying full price for anything, heck even my dad does it so yeah.

I understood that the reason why Gracie was so happy to go was because Danny took her around the lame hotel to trick or treat were clearly nobody was thinking about the holiday. I think that this was the main reason that they showed the beginning, all the kids going and then we get the contrast. I don't get why Danny didn't make a little effort.

I block Lori out as much as possible so in all honesty, I didn't hear the Danno thing, I only found out after reading everyone's reactions to it. I don't like it but I'll just pretend it didn't happen.

Also, I didn't even look at her and Gaby in that scene, Steve winking at Danny had my whole attention ^__^

I'm happy that there was more Kono and also Chin but I don't like it that Kono wasn't there when they went to get the bad guy at the end.

Date: 2011-11-01 02:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] delicatale.livejournal.com
I don't understand either why Danny didn't take her anywhere else than the other rooms of his hotel. It doesn't make a lot of sense, to me, even though I get why it was in.

I'd rather have had Kono at the end, too. Sigh.

HEE, it was so amazing! Even the epic bitchface he pulled when he and Chin first walked in, which I think was more because of Chin's, "whatcha gonna do on this very large mattress?" BECAUSE HE KNOWS, OBVIOUSLY. And Danny's, "you only cost me a beer," wasn't fooling anyone, either.

I choose to ignore Lori too. There's enough good stuff in this show for me to ignore her. And in the end scene I didn't hate her, weirdly, when she was much more casual. Maybe they should have her dress like that all the time and I might actually like her.

Steve in that yellow t-shirt! Oh my god so lovely. I though blue suited him but I want him in yellow all of the time now.
