Exhaustion is burning Danny's eyes. He's running on empty, weary to the bones from the events of the past week, too many thoughts and too much shit piling up on top of all of them, too many unresolved fights and unexplained mysteries.
It's not until he parks the Camaro in front of Steve's house that he lets the tiredness take control. He went for groceries after dropping Steve off, knowing the man would probably strip naked and run to splash in the ocean, even with that godawful stomach wound and all the possibilities for infection - it's a wonder Max managed to clean him up well enough to prevent that before.
So Danny expects Steve to be outside, if not in the water at least watching it, making up for lost time. He doesn't expect Steve to be passed out on his couch, on his stomach no less - not a good idea with this wound, but this is Steve, Steve on painkillers. Nothing surprises Danny any more.
Danny pads through the house quietly after taking his shoes off in the doorway, and leaves the groceries in the kitchen before moving back to the living room. He sits in the armchair for a moment, elbows on his knees as he looks at Steve, his face relaxed, the frown lines still evident on his features. Danny wants to reach out and smooth them out, knowing more than one have been caused by Danny himself.
Danny, Danny just feels a fool. He let himself get wrapped up in this thing with Rachel, and yet, he stayed. He stayed for Steve.
Sighing, Danny stands up, hovering above Steve for a moment before lowering himself on top of him, careful to tuck himself in Steve's good side, not willing to put more pressure on Steve's wound. For once thankful to be smaller than Steve, Danny rests on his side on top of Steve, using him as a mattress, wedged between Steve and the back of the couch. Steve stirs, a hand flailing off the side of the sofa.
"Mrrf, wha' you doin'?"
"Taking a nap."
"Did you sleep at all last week?"
Steve’s voice is low, a rumble that Danny feels all the way through his chest. He lets his hand drop to Steve’s back, feeling his warmth, allowing it to make Danny feel more alive. He closes his eyes, finding himself nuzzling the back of Steve’s neck, and Steve merely leans into the touch, until Danny’s nose is pressed into the hairs at the nape of his neck.
“I slept.”
“Liar.”
“Well I can sleep now.” The words are loaded but they fit for Danny, they ring true in the hollow of his chest and they feel right, wrapped around Steve’s warmth. “Am I hurting you?”
“No. Don’t move.” And those words are loaded, too, uttered in a whisper and Danny closes his eyes, leaves his hand on Steve’s back, thumb brushing back and forth against the cotton of his shirt. His eyes droop closed as his heartbeat falls in sync with Steve’s breathing.
“Okay.”
