in Months and Miles, Danny speaks a lot about Rachel, rarely speaks of his family. In my head, of course they know, but the first person Steve thinks about is Rachel, not anyone from Danny's family. As for the Mafia part, to me his parents haven't had contact with them in ages, and are avoiding it at all costs, because it's just not what they want to deal with. And Danny's not important enough to start a chase that his parents would all too happily go and report to the police.
Now, I'm not saying it's perfect, obviously, but I'll admit, it's not something I focused much on!
And yes, Danny was definitely terrified that he'd never see Steve again, but he made a decision - a harsh and quick one, but still, it was a choice and he couldn't turn back on it because of the hope of seeing Steve again. For a long while, he lived with the hope that Steve would manage to find him again anyway...and look what happened :').
