this is always such an interesting question. and i think that it's personal to the fandom and the character.
much as i am pro-bareback in fic - would the characters not use a condom on their first go? probably not. these are two guys who well aware of the world they're living in; two who are responsable and street savvy. i think that they would use protection the first time.
the flip side of that, of course, is that they're bleeding all over each other all the time ANYWAY, and that is a trope that i have used for many-a-fandom.
but for Steve and Danny, i think the first time would be safe. and then of course Steve goes all neanderthal and "mine" and they get tested and throw the condoms away... but that's later. ;-)
