For first time, I think condoms are a must, at least in my book.
When it comes to established relationship, then it can become obsolete to use one.
For the in-between, i guess it's up to the writer to see if they are only seeing one another or if they have sex on the side of their burgeoning relationship.
I apply that for hetero couples too.
