“How long do we have left?”

Steve checks his watch, counting the hours in his head.

“My plane’s in 6 hours.”

“I suppose you don’t need a ride?”

Steve takes a deep breath, his nose right against Danny’s cheek, smelling aftershave and a little bit of regret. He wants to stay longer, he wants Danny not to miss him, and he doesn’t want to miss Danny, either. For a moment he wishes he could be irresponsible, run away from the Navy and his responsibilities, but he doesn’t want to play hide and seek for the rest of his life, not only for himself, but also for Danny. For Grace.

“You may have gathered that I’m not the best at goodbyes.”

Danny laughs, open-hearted and thoroughly amused.

“That’s an understatement.”

“I’d love it if you gave me a ride but it’s, I - yeah. Can’t deal with it. Guess I’m being selfish. My sister tells me I am every time I call her.”

He’s sharing more than usual and Danny is looking at him, his eyes bright and serious when he lies a hand on Steve’s cheek.

“S’not selfish. I get it. maybe you should visit your sister, though, instead of calling her.”

Yeah, you can do that if you want. I don't mind waiting for you to send to me at the end of the day either though. If you add me to the gmail document, I'll read it whenever I get a chance, I'm still quite busy at work :(
